Press Release: Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster Announces Interim Executive Director

Seven-Year RTCC Veteran to Lead Organization During Search Process

RALEIGH, N.C. (December 15, 2020) – The Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster (RTCC), an initiative of business, government, academic and nonprofit leaders focused on accelerating the growth of the regional and state-wide cleantech economy, has announced that Emmit Owens was unanimously chosen by the RTCC board as the organization’s Interim Executive Director. Emmit previously served as the membership recruitment and retention manager of RTCC.

The decision is part of a plan by the Board of Directors to find a permanent successor for outgoing Executive Director, Susan Sanford. “We want to thank Susan for all of her hard work and leadership over the past five years. Susan has been an integral part of RTCC’s success, guiding the organization as it established its nonprofit charter, supporting the Joules Accelerator in winning a US EDA grant, and executing a portion of the EDA project scope related to development of a Cleantech Corridor between Raleigh and Charlotte.  The entire board wishes her well in her new endeavor,” said Gary Rackliffe, chairman of RTCC board.

In announcing the appointment of Emmit Owens, Gary Rackliffe said, “The Board of Directors is enthusiastic about having Emmit serve as Interim Executive Director. He knows the organization, its members, and helped lead the development of our newly adopted strategic plan. I am confident his leadership during this transition will allow us to continue creating value for our members and to execute RTCC’s program of work.”

In accepting the appointment, Emmit Owens said, "I am excited to continue RTCC’s good work as we fulfill our vision to create sustainable communities through cleantech innovation and adoption. I appreciate the Board’s confidence in my ability to lead through this transition.”

Emmit has been with RTCC since January 2014. During that time, he has served in a variety of roles leading programs and communications for the organization, as well as managing relationships with members and key stakeholders. Emmit has eight years of nonprofit experience and holds a Masters of Public Administration degree from UNC Wilmington.

The Board is currently planning and will soon implement the search for a permanent Executive Director.
