Clean Tech Summit Promotes Local Innovation

The North Carolina clean energy sector generated $3.6 billion in total revenue in 2013, according to a recent census administered by the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association (NCSEA). Additionally, the number of full-time employees has grown 20 percent, to 18,404, over 2012 numbers at the 570 firms who participated in the census.

Cleantech Cluster Bridging the Gap

The Research Triangle Region Cleantech Cluster, part of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership in North Carolina, is a year old. It’s too young to have accomplished much, but it might be the energy business version of a new model of industrial organization. The theory of economic clusters, first proposed at the end of the 19th century, was given new life in 1990 when Harvard professor Michael Porter published The Competitive Advantage of Nations. Porter’s cluster idea became a powerful meme, used to explain everything from banking’s concentration in New York and London, software centers such as Silicon Valley and furniture making in North Carolina, to Hollywood, an early version of an industrial cluster.
